Sponsored Swim Starts This Week!!

May 3, 2011

Portsmouth Northsea Swimming Club is holding a Sponsored Swim
from Tuesday 3rd until Saturday 7th May

The sponsored swim is being held in order to raise funds and awareness for Transplant Sports UK as well as to give the opportunity to our swimmer Nicole Mackenzie the chance to go to the World Transplant Games in Goteborg Sweden June 2011. Two years ago Nicole had to have a kidney transplant generously donated from her father. Fortunately she has made an fantastic recovery.

As a club PNSC collectively will swim the distance from Portsmouth to Sweden. Every swimmer has a sponsor form which if you have not yet received it can be collected from the PN Office.

On Friday 6th May there will also be a raffle with some fantastic prizes including a voucher for a competition suit from Swim Stop, a subscription to the Swimming Times and a Cake in the design of a swimming pool from Julie’s Cakes. There will also be a stand about organ donation and representatives from Transplant Sports UK.

There will be photographs taken to advertise the event as well as Portsmouth coming down to film some of the event. So big smiles 🙂

To receive an organ from another person is something very special. It’s not just another gift; it’s the gift of life.

Transplant Sports UK is a registered charity which main mission is: “To bridge the gap between the need for an organ transplant and the hundreds of thousands of people who die around the world each year because no transplant is available for them.”

The charity does this by organising sports and social events for transplant recipients to show benefits and create awareness to others.

One of the main events which brings the transplant athletes together is the World Transplant Games which are held every two years. The first ever games was held in our home town of Portsmouth in 1978. Starting out with 99 competitors from 5 different countries it is now coming up to its 18th World Games with a fantastic 69 counties representing over 1500 competitors!! The 18th World Transplant Games is to be held this summer in Goteborg, Sweden with over 50 events including swimming, athletics, golf and cycling.

Nicole has been selected along with 14 other juniors and 120 adults to represent the United Kingdom. Nicole was selected after her fantastic achievements in the UK Transplant Games in Bath winning one gold, two silvers and one bronze.
